This is not a political post but…
I am not the same 18-year-old girl who only knew one way. I have had the pleasure of meeting new people and experiencing new cultures. My eyes have been open to a great big world, and yet eveything seems to come down to this vote. Republican or Democrate? Conservative or Liberal? Right or Left? Make one wrong vote, and you will have personally committed a huge injustice. What??
The pressure is on, but honestly I don’t know where I fall. In a world of black and white, I feel like the outcasted gray, that has no place in this political climate. It leaves me confused, fearful, and lost. Who am I, if I can’t pick just one side? Who am I, when I don’t reflect my childhood upbringing? Who am I, when I don’t know whom to trust to tell me the facts? Who am I?
In the midst of my confusion I know one fact: I am a child of God (2 Corinthians 6:18). My identity is in Christ (Galatians 3:27-28). When things of this world don’t make sense, that’s all right because I am not of the world (Colossians 3:1-3). When this world seems desolate, I have a hope for the future. (Jeremiah 31:3).
These facts are true to all of those who hold belief in Jesus Christ. Whether you are Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal, right or left, or a confused gray color (like me); you are made righteous, whole, and perfect in Jesus. Your true identity now lies with Him, and not the cultural constructs of this world. Together we are one in the body of Christ, and the unity we have in Christ will be greater than our differences in this world (Ephesians 4:15-16).
As I walk around with my “I Voted Today” sticker, I am worried that my mix ballot doesn’t fully represent my views. This is when I have to stop, and remind myself to whom my identity truly belongs, to the promises of a hope and a future that I have. Do you need to remind yourself of truth? Let’s all stop, do it together, do it as one.
