I was lucky enough to have some awesome small group leaders through out my time at university. These women where not much older then myself, but they were wise beyond their years, because they allowed the Holy Spirit to speak through them. I will always be thankful for the loving community they provided, and that I so desperately needed throughout my time at university.
At one small group meeting, one of my leaders laid down some simple truth that I really needed to hear. We were talking about feelings of sadness and depression (so I obviously was totally into it). We were discussing how music plays into our feelings and emotions, and how when we are having feelings of sadness or depression; we tend to listen to songs that reflect how we are feeling. I am totally guilty of this. If I am feeling sad or depressed, I will put on an acoustic playlist of sad songs (curtsey of Spotify), and just wallow in my feelings.
One of the leaders, who is amazingly southern, looked at all of us and said, “Sweet friends, instead of listening to music that reflects our moods, we need to listen to music that speaks the truth of the gospel into us instead.” She went on to say that depressing music just feeds our sadness and depression, but Christian or gospel music, speaks the joyful truth into our emotional state, and reminds us of the joy and hope we have in Christ.
Y’all my mind was blown by this simple revelation/advice. I decided to test it out for a week, and just listen to contemporary Christian music on my car radio, and walks across campus. This little experiment changed my world! I was blessed by this advice because having the gospel sung over me while I was depressed or sad really did remind me of the joy I have in Christ! I would get totally pumped up instead of wallowing in my emotions. Literally, mind blown!
So, I would like to share with y’all some of my go to songs! Also some radio suggestions. When I was living in the Houston area my car radio was always on 89.3 KSBJ. As a Dallas dweller, my car radio is always on 94.9 KLTY. I also have a Spotify playlist called “My Jesus Songs,” that I continually update with all my favorite worship/contemporary Christian songs. Most days I just turn on the playlist, and let it play over whatever I am doing. Here are links to some songs that inspire me, and can give me a quick boost in energy when I have none:
“Never Been A Moment” by Micha Tyler:
“Grace to Grace” and “What A Beautiful Name” by Hillsong Worship
“We Believe” by Newsboys:
“Out Of Hiding” by Steffany Gretzinger:
“God Is On The Move” by 7eventh Time Down:
These are just a few of my go to songs! I would love to hear if y’all have any go to songs! Let me know in the comments!
